To address concerns about Internet safety, Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson and Internet security leader Symantec are hosting a Town Hall Event in conjunction with Giant Campus' Cybercamps program, the nationally-recognized leader in technology summer programs for youth. The Town Hall will be held at the Museum of New York City on Thursday, August 2, 20007 from 1-3 p.m. EST.
During this event, they will explore the role the Internet and other technologies play in kids' personal, school and family lives, including:
- How kids use the Internet
- What Web sites kids are really visiting
- What kids fear about the Internet
- What kids are sharing on social networking sites
- Who really knows more about the Internet - parents or kids?
Important Facts About Children and the Internet:
- 55% of online teens have profiles online - of these, 79% have included photos of themselves and 66% have included photos of their friends (PEW)
- 32% of online teens have been contacted by strangers online and 21% of teens who have been contacted by strangers have engaged an online stranger to find out more info about that person (PEW)
- Four in ten teens report being cyberbullied in the last year (Harris Interactive)
- Victims of online harassment are three times more likely to exhibit symptoms of major depression (Cyber Psychology and Behavior)
