To address concerns about Internet safety, Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson and Internet security leader Symantec are hosting a Town Hall Event in conjunction with Giant Campus' Cybercamps program, the nationally-recognized leader in technology summer programs for youth. The Town Hall will be held at the Museum of New York City on Thursday, August 2, 20007 from 1-3 p.m. EST.

During this event, they will explore the role the Internet and other technologies play in kids' personal, school and family lives, including:

  • How kids use the Internet
  • What Web sites kids are really visiting
  • What kids fear about the Internet
  • What kids are sharing on social networking sites
  • Who really knows more about the Internet - parents or kids?

Important Facts About Children and the Internet:

  • 55% of online teens have profiles online - of these, 79% have included photos of themselves and 66% have included photos of their friends (PEW)
  • 32% of online teens have been contacted by strangers online and 21% of teens who have been contacted by strangers have engaged an online stranger to find out more info about that person (PEW)
  • Four in ten teens report being cyberbullied in the last year (Harris Interactive)
  • Victims of online harassment are three times more likely to exhibit symptoms of major depression (Cyber Psychology and Behavior)
