Seattle-based Giant Campus, creator of Weekend Gamerz, will roll out this nationwide program at 36 college and university locations across the country in June 2007. Weekend Gamerz is devoted entirely to the fun of playing games, making friends and socializing. Teens ages 13-17 are encouraged to get out of the house and play their vids (video games) in the company of friends. Games available include Warcraft 3, Half-Life 2, Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology, and Jedi Knights, as well as several not-yet-released top-rated games of 2007. Teens can also bring their own games or play online games such as Guild Wars, Factions, Nightfall, Steam, World of Warcraft, Halo, and Medal of Honor. In addition, for those who prefer something a little less wired, there are plenty of board and card games available for un-plugged entertainment.
Not an ordinary gaming weekend or LAN party, Weekend Gamerz puts a twist on routine game play. The weekend also includes Expert Strategy Sessions with game experts who guide players through game play and share tips and tactics, and fun games during gaming such as Sabotage, Musical Chairs, and Blind Leading the Blind.
Weekend Gamerz participants will learn to win and lose with grace, celebrate the success of team members, teach new gaming skills to peers, and play outdoor games such as Capture the Flag or Ultimate Frisbee. These are all part of the social development aspect of Weekend Gamerz that sets it apart from typical computer game play.
Available as an overnight residential experience or a day-only program (depending on the location), Weekend Gamerz suits the habits of all gamers. Day programs cost $99 and take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gamerz bring their lunch each day, take breaks when they want, and help themselves to all the complimentary snacks and drinks they can handle. The residential experience costs $269 and goes all weekend long, from Friday at 7:30 p.m. to Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Snack foods, drinks, brunch (both days), and dinner (Saturday only) are provided. Residential program participants stay in university housing and the game labs are located in air-conditioned facilities.
At some locations, Weekend Gamerz can also be combined with a week or two at Cybercamps to create an extended camp experience.
