SEATTLE - June 5, 2008 - Giant Campus, the nationally recognized leader in technology education programs, today announced the launch of an innovative summer program in partnership with K12, the nation's leading online curriculum provider for grades K-12.
Giant Campus is offering Intro to Digital Media, an instructor-led, virtual summer camp program. This one week, online program for teens (of all skill levels), teaches:
- essential elements in game design including programming, sound, and high score tracking
- professional graphic design techniques including filters, layers, and special effects
- and how to create 2D animations with layers, keyframes, and motion tweens.
"A virtual camp is the perfect blend of independent study combined with real-time, online instruction and peer collaboration," said James Peters, Giant Campus' director of content development. "In this instructor-led program, teens participate in daily, live session topics. After a period of instruction, each student works independently and online on their own projects."
Through a series of hands-on projects using Adobe Creative Suite 3 and Multimedia Fusion 2, teens learn the basic concepts of digital media authoring and practice the techniques used by the pros. In this virtual environment instead of "raising your hand" to ask a question, help is just a few clicks away to chat one-on-one with the instructor. By the end of the week, each teen will complete at least two original projects on their own.
"We've been doing offline summer programs for more than a decade now," said Giant Campus CEO Pete Findley. "We're now taking our more than one million hours of in-person instruction into the online environment, and K12 is a great partner to do this with. Our content with their delivery platform makes this a fun and convenient choice for teens and families wanting to fight the summer brain drain." According to the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University it is projected that kids lose one to two months of reading and math learning during the summer months.
"We're thrilled to include Giant Campus' innovative Digital Media course as part of K12's summer program," said Celia Stokes, K12 Chief Marketing Officer. "We know the demand for technology courses is high among K12 students and prospects, and Giant Campus has set the quality standard for delivery of these courses online." Additional K12 summer offerings include a variety of Power-Glide foreign language courses for enrichment or course credit.
The Introduction to Digital Media virtual summer camp is offered in 5-day sessions, running weekly from July 7-11, July 14-18, and July 21-25, 2008. Sessions are half-day, from 9 a.m. to noon PST. Tuition is $129 per weekly session. No software purchase is required to participate in the course.
