Are you a 2D artist looking to take your skills to the next level? Do you want to build the foundation you'll need to animate 3D objects?

This introductory design course teaches the fundamental concepts of 3D modeling and will allow you to begin exploring the basic concepts and skills of 3D animation.

In this course, you'll use Blender®, a powerful free alternative to expensive 3D modeling software such as Maya® or 3ds Max® (formerly 3D Studio Max).

You'll create many 3D models in this course. Some examples include:

  • A monkey wearing a hat
  • A house
  • A creature
  • An animation of the creature walking, created by adding an armature to the character
  • A landscape terrain, using points on a grid to create mountains and a lamp and a color gradient to create a sun and a moon
  • A car created by stretching a 2D grid into a 3D car shape
  • An animation of the creature walking through the house’s opening door
  • And many more!

As you complete these projects, you'll develop the skills you need to design and create 3D models of your own.

Topics you'll learn about include:

  • The Blender interface
  • 3D space and 3D objects
  • Creating, combining, moving, scaling, and rotating objects
  • Materials and textures
  • Lamps and lighting
  • Armatures, poses, and keyframes
  • Extruding and mirroring 3D objects
  • Animating objects, positioning cameras, and rendering animations
  • Appending materials, textures, objects, armatures, and animations
  • And much more!
